Hitherto considered conspecific with F. intermedia (which see). Possible race deluzae dubious; known from a single specimen from near Serra dos Órgãos (SE Brazil). Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • F. g. rufiventris Carriker, 1936 – E Colombia (Meta and Guainía S to Caquetá) and S Venezuela (W Amazonas except extreme N).
  • F. g. grisea (Boddaert, 1783) – Guyana, coastal Suriname and French Guiana, N & E Brazil (drainage of R Branco, lower R Negro E to Amapá and, S of R Amazon, E from R Madeira apart from few scattered records W of it to W Amazonas, and S to Mato Grosso, Goiás, Bahia and, locally, to E Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and N Rio de Janeiro) and NE Bolivia (E Beni, NE Santa Cruz).
