Introduction

A large pigeon with a wide distribution across sub-Saharan Africa, Speckled Pigeon can be common in a variety of habitats including open woodland, croplands, and grasslands, whilst avoiding dense forest. It is often found close to people in in villages and towns. The large red bare skin around the eyes is an obvious field mark, but it also has a rufous back and wing coverts, which are heavily spotted with white, as well as a rufous neck collar with a fluffy appearance. The juvenile is duller with a brownish eye patch.
