Introduction

The Spot-winged Pigeon is a large pigeon of open country in southern South America, from southern Peru, through Bolivia, Paraguay, and much of central Argentina. The Spot-winged Pigeon sensu lato is comprised of two fairly distinctive subspecies: maculosa, which is the subspecies of the lowlands, occuring mainly in the chaco desert and surrounding country, south to Patagonia in Chubut, and albipennis, which occurs in the high Andean mountains and plateaus in northern Argentina, Bolivia, and southern Peru. The lowland subspecies (maculosa) shows even spotting to the wing coverts, while the highlands subspecies (albipennis), has less spotting, and a distinctive broad, white slash across the trailing edge of the wing coverts.
