Recent evolutionary study of this species and H. naevius#R found that neither is monophyletic, as present species is nested within latter and is sister to the H. naevius forms found S of R Amazon. See also H. naevius. Birds from W Colombian lowlands described as race subsimilis, but considered inseparable from nominate. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • H. n. capnitis (Bangs, 1906) – Caribbean slope from Honduras S to Costa Rica (ranging to Pacific slope in NW) and W Panama (E to Coclé, ranging to Pacific slope in Veraguas).
  • H. n. naevioides (Lafresnaye, 1847) – E Panama (both slopes E from Colón and Panamá Province), N & W Colombia (E to Cesar & Santander on N slope) and W Ecuador (S to Guayas and Chimborazo).
