Previously placed in Ixos (see H. rufigularis). All three races of present species were indicated in HBW as possible separate species, but monticola intermediate in crown colour and geography, and all taxa similarly proportioned; thorough review of plumage, voice and genetics needed. Three subspecies provisionally recognized.

  • H. s. cinereiceps (Bourns & Worcester, 1894) – Tablas Streak-breasted Bulbul – Tablas and Romblon, in C Philippines.
  • H. s. monticola (Bourns & Worcester, 1894) – Cebu Streak-breasted Bulbul – Cebu.
  • H. s. siquijorensis (Steere, 1890) – Siquijor Streak-breasted Bulbul – Siquijor, in SC Philippines.
