Until recently treated as conspecific with R. rabori (which see). Often considered conspecific with R. grandis (which see). Geographical variation slight and possibly unworthy of taxonomic recognition#R; proposed race zamboanga, described from Masawan, on Mt Malindang (E Zamboanga Peninsula), in W Mindanao, treated as synonym of alaris. Three subspecies currently recognized.
