Has been considered part of the M. afer complex, but distinct morphologically and in habitat preferences; most closely related to M. griseiventris#R. Nominate race and tanganjicae intergrade in SW Rwanda. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • M. f. fasciiventer (Reichenow, 1893) – Rwenzori Mts (E DRCongo and W Uganda) and S in mountains to W Rwanda, highlands W of L Kivu and W Burundi.
  • M. f. tanganjicae (Reichenow, 1909) – Itombwe Mts, in SE Kivu (E DRCongo) and SW Rwanda (Nyungwe Forest).
  • M. f. kaboboensis (Prigogine, 1957) – Mt Kabobo, in extreme SE Kivu (E DRCongo).
