Formerly considered conspecific with D. hottentottus. Races treated as two distinct species by some authors#R; others#R consider viridinitens better retained as a race of D. hottentottus. DNA studies required in order to clarify taxonomic position and relationships. Two subspecies recognized.

  • D. s. sumatranus Wardlaw-Ramsay, 1880 – Sumatran Drongo – highlands of Sumatra (Batak Highlands and Barisan Range, from Aceh S to Mt Kaba, in Bengkulu).
  • D. s. viridinitens (Salvadori, 1894) – Mentawai Drongo – Mentawai Is (Siberut, Sipura, N & S Pagai), off W Sumatra.
