Legend Overview
Introduction
This colorful dove can be found across hill forests of Western New Guinea (Indonesia) and Papua New Guinea. Two easily distinguishable subspecies are recognized, a dark red-capped subspecies from the Vogelkop (Bird’s Head) of New Guinea, and a yellow-green capped subspecies to the east of the island.
The Ornate Fruit-Dove is strictly frugivorous, eating mostly figs of different species. Though it is a common and even abundant species in many areas, the dark red-capped subspecies has a relatively small and restricted range.
