Field Identification

10·5 cm. Has forehead to middle of crown, lores, region below eyering and ear-coverts blackish, shading into olive-green on rear crown and upperparts, which shade into olive-yellow on rump; broad white eyering interrupted at front by black spot; ill-defined yellow malar stripe; chin to abdomen white, faintly tinged buffy, vent and undertail-coverts yellow; iris dark brown; bill black, slaty blue at base; legs slate-blue or slate-brown. Sexes alike. Juvenile undescribed.

Systematics History

Sometimes treated as conspecific with Z. minor, of which it may be merely a race that has lost its yellow throat. Monotypic.

Tagula I (in Louisade Is), off SE New Guinea.

Habitat

Lowland forest and forest edge at 300m; probably most numerous in hills.

Not globally threatened. Currently considered Data Deficient. Restricted-range species: present in Louisiade Archipelago EBA. Virtually unknown. Found only on Tagula I (c. 866 km²), but no modern records, except for an unpublished report of up to four observed in 2013–2014 (1). None seen during a ten-day trek from N coast S to Mt Riu in 1992. Over half of forest on Tagula is degraded and threat of logging hangs over remaining lowland forest BirdLife International (2015) Species factsheet: Zosterops meeki. Nothing known of the extent of this species' range on the island, no population data and nothing known of popoulation trend. Lack of information precludes a robust assessment of its risk of extinction; it is therefore listed as Data Deficient.
