Introduction

The White-tufted Sunbeam gets its name from the notable tufts of white feathers on its chest. Also notable is its copper tail and the magenta coloring on the lower back and rump. These sunbeams are found only in parts of Peru where they inhabit drier parts of evergreen montane forests, intermontane valleys, open shrub, and glades is semi-dry forests. Usually, these hummingbirds perch conspicuously on high dead twigs, but where they overlap with Shining Sunbeams (Aglaeactis cupripennis), they are more reclusive and instead perch on low branches in dense bushes.

Field Identification

12 cm; 7–8·5 g. Bill straight, black. Immediate impression is fuscous with tawny tail, the shining back is displayed when hovering. Male above fuscous-black with strong magenta reflection on rump and lower back; below dull brown with blackish upper throat and pectoral band, and white feather tuft on central breast; tail forked. Female with less iridescent back and reduced fork in tail. Juvenile more uniform brown with no iridescent feathers. Race regalis has shorter bill; generally more rufous-brown, with rufous tail.

Systematics History

Editor's Note: This article requires further editing work to merge existing content into the appropriate Subspecies sections. Please bear with us while this update takes place.

Closely related to A. cupripennis and perhaps A. aliciae. May be sister-species of A. pamela. Morphology suggests past gene flow with A. cupripennis, but now reproductively isolated. Two subspecies recognized.

Distribution

Editor's Note: Additional distribution information for this taxon can be found in the 'Subspecies' article above. In the future we will develop a range-wide distribution article.

Habitat

Inhabits patches of evergreen montane forest in slightly drier zones and often at much greater altitudes than A. cupripennis. Particularly common in Escallonia and Polylepis forests with abundant flowering vines. Subordinate to A. cupripennis, keeping low in the vegetation where the other species is present; at 3500–4300 m, rarely to 4600 m.

Movement

Remains in the same area during short periods of heavy snow. However, seasonal habitat shifts may take place in the dry season.

Diet and Foraging

Takes nectar from flowers of Barnadesia, Berberis, Brachyotum, Centropogon, Labiatae, Lupinus, Salpichroa and Siphocampylos. Always feeds clinging to the flowers. Also takes insects in the air.

Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Calls include a repeated “tzit” and during chases a twittering series, “titi-tsreet-tsreet-tsreet” or similar. Also a thin, high-pitched and fruiteater (Pipreola)-like downslurred drawn-out “seeeuuu”.

Breeding

Not known.

Not globally threatened. Currently considered Near Threatened. CITES II. Restricted-range species: present in Peruvian High Andes EBA. Common at very few sites. It was, however, the most abundant species at three sites in the Cordillera Vilcanota (1). Although its habitat has been destroyed in much of Huancavelica and Ayacucho, and in Cuzco species has become restricted to Cordilleras Vilcanota and Vilcabamba, many suitable patches of habitat remain in Apurímac. Occurs in the small Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary.
