White-wedged Piculet (Picumnus albosquamatus)

French: Picumne noir et blanc German: Weißschuppen-Zwergspecht Spanish: Carpinterito albiescamoso

Picumnus albosquamatus

, 1840,

Río Tamanipaya, Yungas, Bolivia

Hybridizes with P. dorbignyanus, also to limited extent with P. cirratus, and occasionally with P. temminckii. Race guttifer formerly considered a separate species, but appears to intergrade with nominate in W Mato Grosso; these mixed populations probably account for form previously listed as race corumbanus (reported from Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná#R and from Goiás#R). Forms described as P. asterias (known only from type specimen) and P. sagittatus appear indistinguishable from variable guttifer, and are thus synonymized with it. Two subspecies currently recognized.
