P. L. Sclater and Salvin, 1876,
Hitherto treated as a race of P. maculosa but here given species status on account of broad white wingband on closed and open wing formed by broad white edges to outer wing-coverts (3); paler brown-grey wing-coverts with less pronounced white spotting (2); longer bill, effect size 2.39 (2); in addition, iris may be paler (NHMUK label data), and probably with ecological differences given confinement above 2000 m vs confinement of maculosa below 1000 m. Related to P. picazuro. Monotypic.
C Peru (Lima) S to W & C Bolivia and extreme NW Argentina (N Jujuy), as well as N Chile (Arica y Parinacota and Tarapacá)#R.
