Wire-tailed Manakin (Pipra filicauda)

Taxonomy

French: Manakin filifère German: Fadenpipra Spanish: Saltarín Uirapuru
Taxonomy:

Pipra filicauda

Spix

, 1825,

São Paulo de Olivença, River Solimões, west Amazonas, Brazil

.

Long placed in monospecific Teleonema on basis of highly modified tail feathers, but genetic data#R support inclusion in present genus. Forms a species-group with P. aureola and P. fasciicauda, the three replacing one another geographically. “P. heterocerca” is a hybrid between present species and P. aureola. Races intergrade around Colombia–Ecuador border, in addition to which individual variation apparently quite widespread; species perhaps better treated as monotypic#R. Two subspecies currently recognized.
