Closely related to A. parulus (which see); see also A. alpinus. Four subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • A. f. huancabambae (Chapman, 1924) – N Peru (Piura and Cajamarca to Ancash and Junín).
  • A. f. arequipae (Chapman, 1926) – W slope of Andes of SW Peru (S from Lima) S to NW Chile (Arica, Tarapacá).
  • A. f. cuzcoensis (Chapman, 1924) – SE Peru (Cuzco).
  • A. f. flavirostris P. L. Sclater & Salvin, 1876 – high Andes of Bolivia and in W Argentina (S to Mendoza and N Chubut); E to Buenos Aires and Entre Ríos in non-breeding season.
