Race perplexus well differentiated from nominate genetically but not morphologically#R; study of vocalizations needed. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • P. a. armandii (A. Milne-Edwards, 1865) – C & NE China (SE Inner Mongolia and SW Jilin S to E Qinghai, E Xizang and W Sichuan); non-breeding S China (W & S Yunnan), Myanmar, N Thailand, N Laos and N Vietnam (E Tonkin).
  • P. a. perplexus Ticehurst, 1934 – SC China (Ningxia and Hubei S to SE Xizang, NW & N Yunnan and SW Sichuan) and NE Myanmar; non-breeding Myanmar and S China (S & W Yunnan, Guizhou).

    Food and feeding

    Few data. Forages in low branches of trees and bushes, frequently on the ground.


    Very poorly known. Nests found in Jun; clutch 4–5 eggs. No other information.

    Status and conservation

    Not globally threatened. Uncommon throughout most of breeding range; scarce to locally common in SE Asian wintering area.
