One of the most useful tools for an upcoming birding trip is the Printable checklist.
In this tutorial we explain how, once you have configured the Printable checklist as desired, to get a printed version of the checklist including pages numbers, coloured highlighting for your selected target species and icons for photos, videos and sounds. The process differs a bit based on the browser you are using.
In order to get a PDF document, click on the PDF icon above the species list. A dialog window will open. Change the printer to "Adobe PDF".
To get access to the page setup first, click on the Open Menu (top right-hand corner of your browser) and then on the Print option. When the Print Preview page appears; click on Page Setup and the Page Setup window will appear.
In the Format and Options tab, you can select the layout orientation and the scale.
In the Options block, click the Print Background (colours & images) box to see the coloured highlighting of your selected targets and the icons for photos, videos and sounds.
In the Margins and Header/Footer tab, you can specify the margins and headers and footers of the printed document. Use the dropdown menus to select where you want to print the page numbers (any combination of top or bottom and left, centre or right). You can choose from two formats:
• Page #: Print only the page number.
• Page # of #: Print the page number and the total number of pages.
Remember to select “blank” for all the other dropdown menus in the block, otherwise the preconfigured options will be printed.
To double check the configuration before printing, select Print Preview (press Alt to see the top bar and File) and make sure you see the species in the correct highlight colours depending on your selection and the page numbers.
Click OK to finish making changes and close the Page Setup window.
To print the webpage you're viewing in Chrome, press Ctrl+P (Mac: ⌘-P). A window will open with print setting options.
Here you can select the layout orientation, colour or black ink.
Click on More settings and tick Headers and footers, which will automatically include the date and “Printable checklist I HBW Alive” as headers, and the web address and page number (“# / total #” format) as footers.
As you can see in the previous image, if the Background graphics box is not selected, then you don’t see the highlighting that some species should have based on your selection. To include the highlighting, click on the Background graphics box, and after the “Loading preview” you will see the highlighted species, as in the image below.
Once you have finished marking your preferences, change the "Destination" to "Save as PDF" and click Print.
To print the webpage you're viewing in Safari press ⌘-P. A window will open with print setting options.
Here you can select the number of copies and if you want to create a PDF file.
Click on Show details and, in the new window, select Print headers and footers. In the bottom right-hand corner you will see the page number with the format “Page # of #”
As you can see in the previous image, if the Print backgrounds box is not selected, then you don’t see the highlighting that some species should have based on your selection. To include the highlighting, click on the Print backgrounds box.
If you are using Internet Explorer, Click on File > Page Setup (press Alt to see the top bar).
In the Headers and Footers section, use the dropdown menus to select where you want to print the page numbers (any combination of top or bottom and left, centre or right). You can choose from two formats:
• Print only the page number.
• Print the page number and the total number of pages.
Remember to leave “Empty” for all the other dropdown menus that you do not want displayed.
To correctly see the coloured highlighting of your selected targets, be sure that the Print Background Colors and Images box is selected. Once you have done this, you can double check by clicking File > Print Preview and you will see the page numbers where you have selected and the highlighted target species.
Once you are all set, change the printer to "Adobe PDF" and click on the Print button.
There is no way to directly configure printing options on the Microsoft Edge browser. Click the three little dots at the top right, and select "Open with Internet Explorer". Then, click the little gear at the top right, then click "Print", then "Page setup...". The rest of the steps is the same as for Internet Explorer.
