Identification
Chunky finch with a huge pale bill. Male’s vivid black-and-yellow coloration is distinctive, but note the dark rump (yellow in the similar Collared Grosbeak). Female is pale gray with a tan wash to the underparts; her Collared counterpart is much more brightly colored. Forages in pairs or small flocks in hill and montane forest; often found in coniferous groves.
